Bachmann’s telephone line to God is open again!

Bachmann set foot on the godless,* Prius-driving left coast last weekend to visit with a group called the Republican Jewish Coalition. The Minnesota Independent reports that she told them she believes the United States will be cursed by a wrathful Old Testament-style God if we don’t support Israel:

I am convinced in my heart and in my mind that if the United States fails to stand with Israel, that is the end of the United States . . . [W]e have to show that we are inextricably entwined, that as a nation we have been blessed because of our relationship with Israel, and if we reject Israel, then there is a curse that comes into play. And my husband and I are both Christians, and we believe very strongly the verse from Genesis [Genesis 12:3], we believe very strongly that nations also receive blessings as they bless Israel. It is a strong and beautiful principle.

Now, our fundamental objection to this is that Bachmann does not have a special window into what God is thinking. Even evangelical Christians don’t generally claim they actually hear God talking to them; they interpret the Bible or fast until delirious or just make it up. So anytime anyone tells you they know what God thinks about current affairs, they are lying, either to you or to themselves. And then there’s the question of why a secular democracy should be basing public policy on the Book of Genesis in the first place.

That said, we have some more specific objections to this statement:
1. Genesis was written just a TEENSY little bit before the state of Israel came into being. Thus, the Israel referred to in Genesis is probably not the current state of Israel.
2. A commenter on Dump Bachmann noted that Bachmann has gotten free family vacations to Israel every year she’s in office, courtesy of the America Israel Education Foundation. So we suspect her support has less to do with God and more to do with Mammon.
3. Not supporting Israel has failed thus far to get several other countries struck down. Iran, for all its numerous flaws, has a lot of money.

*BTW, ever notice how nobody mentions the huge Orthodox Jewish populations in Brooklyn and LA when they talk about how the coasts are godless?
